John Shaw
Independent Candidate - Florida House Of Representatives
Issues - Crime:
John Shaw's proposed solution to decrease crime in the
State of Florida is a reform of drug policy.
As irrefutable evidence has shown, prohibition is not an effective preventative measure for any substance. The alcohol prohibition of the 1920s proved to be a rude awakening for everyone to witness - exactly what happens when you take a person's right away to do unto themselves. The start of that prohibition brought a new wave of disrespect for laws in America in general, and the effects were long-term. Alcohol prohibition gave a hard blow to the economy, while giving rise to gangs and gang-related crime. As statistics have shown, it wasn't until after the Volstead Act was lifted that crime once again started to decrease.
As America enters its 94th year of the prohibition against drugs, our crime rate continues to increase. It wont be until after these laws and restrictions are reformed when we start to notice a real drop in crime. Along with this, our outrageously overcrowded prison systems will be open and dedicated to the reprimanding of true criminals instead of helpless drug users. The money we would save by ending this drug war could be used for intervention programs and rehabilitation centers for those users. We would also be able to free up our law enforcement to focus more on violent crime and property crime.
We must stop looking at this as a criminal issue, and start looking at it as a public health problem.
